How to review your answers after a mock Army promotion board

Use a simple answer log to turn a mock promotion board into a focused next study session.

By ·

A mock board is most useful when you leave with something more specific than “study harder.” Record what happened, separate missing knowledge from delivery problems, and choose a small set of corrections for your next practice session. This is a suggested study method, not an official board grading system.

Use a four-column answer log

On paper or in a note, create columns for the topic, your answer, what needs verification, and your next action. Record the substance of what you said immediately after practice. “Got leadership wrong” is difficult to act on; “could name the principle but could not explain how I would apply it” gives you a concrete assignment.

Ask your practice partner to distinguish three situations: an incorrect fact, an incomplete explanation, or an answer that was accurate but difficult to follow. Those need different kinds of practice. Repeating a correct definition will not solve an unclear explanation.

Verify before memorizing a correction

Use your unit’s current board guidance and the applicable official publication to check a disputed answer. Search the Army Publishing Directorate for the publication itself and confirm its version. A friend’s remembered answer or an old screenshot is a starting point for a question, not the final authority.

For unit-specific expectations, ask your sponsor or leader what applies to your board. Do not assume that a generic question list defines every topic or procedure you will encounter.

Turn each weak answer into one small drill

  • Fact gap: read the relevant passage, close it, and explain the answer from memory. Check the wording and meaning afterward.
  • Application gap: add a short hypothetical example showing how the idea affects a leader’s decision. Keep it clearly separate from a story about something you actually did.
  • Delivery gap: say the answer out loud again, with the answer first and supporting detail second. Ask your partner which part was unclear.

A worked practice example

Suppose you recognize a topic but give three disconnected facts instead of answering the question. Your next action could be: “Write one direct opening sentence, support it with two relevant points, and answer a different question on the same topic tomorrow.” This tests understanding rather than your ability to repeat the exact prompt.

End with a short retest

Choose a few corrections you can complete before the next mock session. Retest those topics without looking at the log, then mix in previously strong topics. Keep unresolved items marked for follow-up instead of quietly treating them as learned.

Promotion Ready provides Army promotion-board study tools and practice questions. Use it alongside current official references and your unit’s guidance, and use the answer log to decide what to practice next.
