Army promotion board study guide for SGT and SSG
Start with your unit’s board memorandum and your sponsor’s guidance. Then combine topic study, recall practice, and spoken rehearsal. This 14-day plan gives you a practical routine you can adjust to the time you have.
This is a suggested study routine, not an official board requirement. Your unit sets local expectations; an app or checklist cannot guarantee a promotion.
Army promotion board preparation checklist
Ask your sponsor to help you confirm these items before choosing what to study:
- The board date, location, reporting instructions, and uniform.
- The current unit board memorandum and any assigned study topics.
- The documents and administrative checks your unit requires.
- Which creeds, recitations, and personal introduction your sponsor expects you to rehearse.
- Two short sessions for a mock board with your sponsor or an experienced NCO.
- A list of weak topics based on your first practice session.
Keep the checklist on paper or in your own notes. Check off only what you have confirmed with your sponsor.
A 14-day Army board study plan
Use about 20–30 minutes per day when your schedule allows: study a topic, answer without looking, then explain the answer aloud. Spend more time on weak topics rather than repeatedly reviewing material you already know.
| Days | Focus | What to finish |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Confirm scope and establish a baseline | Collect your unit guidance, list required topics, and test your recall. Mark questions you miss. |
| 3–4 | Leadership and responsibilities | Review the leadership topics on your unit’s list. Give a short example of how you would apply each concept. |
| 5–6 | Army programs and policies | Focus on assigned programs. Verify regulation references using current official publications. |
| 7–8 | Remaining assigned topics | Cover uniforms, training, first aid, weapons, or other subjects only as they apply to your board guidance. Revisit missed questions. |
| 9–10 | Spoken recall | Rehearse your introduction and assigned recitations. Have your sponsor ask questions in an unpredictable order. |
| 11–12 | Mock board and correction | Run a rehearsal. Record specific knowledge gaps, delivery issues, and any administrative items still outstanding. |
| 13 | Focused review | Review your weak-topic list and rehearse concise answers without reading. Confirm reporting details with your sponsor. |
| 14 | Light review and preparation | Check your confirmed checklist, prepare your uniform and required items, and protect time for rest. |
How to practice answering board questions
- Read the question, then hide the answer. Say what you remember aloud.
- Check the answer and its reference. When a requirement may have changed, check the current official source.
- Use your own explanation. For scenario questions, explain how you would act and why; avoid memorizing a script you cannot apply.
- Record the gap. Separate a knowledge gap from a delivery issue such as speaking too quickly.
- Repeat later. Ask your sponsor to revisit weak topics in the next rehearsal.
If you do not know an answer, rehearse handling that honestly with your sponsor. Do not invent a policy or regulation number.

The preparation routine can be used for either board. Your assigned topics, responsibilities, and local expectations may differ, so confirm the scope with your sponsor.
